This blend of Pinotage, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Cabernet Franc spent 12 months in 2nd and 3rd fill French oak barrels. Bright red fruits, including Bing cherries, raspberries, and notions of dried cranberries are supported by refreshing acidity and more subtle details of pink peppercorns, cloves, and toasty earth. Kanonkop was the site of the first planting of Pinotage, a crossing of Pinot Noir and Cinsault that was made by Professor Abraham Perold in 1924. The estate’s current vines are between 33 and 66 years old, producing what is widely agreed to be the benchmark for the varietal. Dry farmed bush-vines with very low yields result in wonderfully intense and expressive fruit, and the wine spends 18 months in French oak, 80% new and 20% second-passage. A wine of real stature and pedigree, the plum and cherry driven palate is thoroughly informed by warm spices and finely integrated toast, all of which is impeccably structured and balanced. Already impressive in the glass, this is also a wine for medium-term aging, as even a few years will develop aromatic complexity and broaden the lovely, resounding finish. SKU: 19182 South Africa
